Columbus Monument, Barcelona

The tallest monument in the world dedicated to the explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus, making it a significant emblem of Barcelona.

This sculptural work in honour of Christopher Columbus is the centrepiece of Plaza de la Paz (Peace Square) in Barcelona, where Las Ramblas and Paseo de Colon meet. Designed by the architect Gaietà Buïgas, it was erected at the end of Las Ramblas in 1888 as part of the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona.

The cylindrical structure is 57 metres high and towers over the old city port. Various artists contributed to the sculptural decoration of the monument, which is is full of detail and symbolism and in an old classical style. The bronze statue of Columbus on top -work of sculptor Rafael Atché- stands on top of a semi-sphere which represents the newly discovered part of the globe, and points his index finger towards America (although in reality it points towards Palma de Mallorca). The base is surrounded by life-size lion sculptures and look as if they are guarding the monument.

In addition, the monument houses the city’s first lift, with a capacity of up to 4 people. For 4 euros per person it is possible to go up the column in the lift and enter a small circular lookout that is hidden in the crown, for 360 degree views of the city and the sea.
