Porto Cathedral, Porto

The Porto Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the historical centre of the city of Porto. It is one of the city's oldest monuments and one of the most important local Romanesque buildings.

The construction of the cathedral began around 1110. Porto, however, had already been a episcopal seat since the 6th century. This first Romanesque building has been modified several times over time.

Around 1333 the funeral chapel of Jean Gordo was added, a knight in the service of King Denis I. The cloister adjacent to the cathedral dates back to the same Gothic period (14th century).

The exterior of the cathedral was modified during the Baroque era. In 1732, the Italian artist and architect Niccoló Nasoni added a large Baroque loggia on the left side of the cathedral. In 1772, a new Baroque portal replaced the old one and the domes of the towers were modified.

The main elevated facade is flanked by two square towers, each with a luminous dome. The portal, in Baroque style (1772), is surmounted by a 13th century Romanesque rose window. The battlements flanking the upper end of the facade add the appearance of a fortress. The whole is quite heterogeneous, combining Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles.
